Death Takes Principal of Newtown School


Texarkana, U.S.A. – Wednesday, April 15, 1959

Funeral services are pending for W. K. Hicks, Sr., principal of Newtown School who died unexpectedly at his home Sunday.

Coroner Wade Turner said death was caused by a heart attack.

Hicks had been principal at Newtown for nearly 12 years. Previously he had been on the Dunbar High School faculty as a teacher and coach.

He was born and reared in Texarkana and was graduated from Dunbar High School. He received a master’s degree in education administration from Prairie View College, Prairie View, Texas.

He was active in local civic affairs and in Negro professional organizations. He was president of the East Texas Negro Teachers Association and immediate past president of the Texas Negro Elementary Principals Association.

Survivors include his wife, a teacher in the Theron Jones elementary school, and a son, W.K. Hicks, Jr., student and athlete at Dunbar.

The body is at the Richardson Funeral Home.
